First Week Results

Are we learning yet?  Weekly turns means that your orders can be precise on the first few days, but that you should include some contingencies for the latter half of the week.  If your orders leave room for doubt in the latter half of the week, the GM looks at the first half and follows suit.  An aggressive strategy early will be pursued late unless otherwise stated, passivity the same.

I'm making the results of raids on settlements and casualties public knowledge.  But I'm not posting the total forces involved, and I'm not doing the math for you guys.  This gives you some intel while preserving some fog of war.  Sometimes you'll be able to deduce some details - a raid on Kor Torrigan that secures 1000gp and loses 20HD of orcs has a minimum force necessary to win that much, for example.

Kor Torrigan

Thanks to a couple of big scores, less than 5,000gp remains in the mountain. Further attempts to loot the dwarves have a -1 per die, as described in the rules on that page.

GoblinTown

GoblinTown has fallen below 500HD of potential slaves.  Treat all further results of 1 on the raiding table as "no effect".

Kul of the Dripping Blades makes a second attempt at raiding Oghma.  Both sides have had a day to whip their goblins into shape, This leaves the fight at another 1:1 odds, and with a roll of a 5, Kul does much better than the first round.  He manages to slay 20HD worth of orc defenders and 50HD worth of goblin defenders, while capturing an even number of both.  Kul also manages to retrieve 518gp from Oghma's stash, but at the cost of 220HD of his own orc and goblin troops.

Oghma, with the inside line, races through the gates of his home village just minutes ahead of the pursuing forces of Kul of the Dripping Blade.  Kul's forces, their blood up, throw themselves at the walls of Chief Oghma.  With no time to prepare their goblins for warfare, it devolves into an orc-on-orc fight.  The defender, even with the benefit of his walls, does not have enough orcs to shift out of the 1:1 column.

Rolling on the CRT table, the result is a 1 - a disaster for Kull!  He loses 60HD worth of orcs, but manages to escape with a paltry 230gp from Ogham's larder for his trouble.  He also causes significant casualties to Oghma's forces to the tune of 90HD worth of defenders.  Luckily for Oghma, none of his subchiefs, ogres, or shaman fall in the battle.  Kul retreats to plan a second attack.

December 3: The Goblin Coup

Porcus Orcus, once a great friend and ally of the goblins, has chosen to sacrifice them upon the altar of his own glory.  Desirous of the title Warlord of Malturrim, he hatches a plan to snatch up all the forces of GoblinTown in one fell swoop.  Knowing that the ramshackle collection of hovels has been decimated by raids in the previous days, he sends his sub-chief into town to recruit a few goblins to his forces and reassures the Goblin Mayor of his friendship.  Using the recruitment as cover, Porcus and one of his sub-chiefs, enter GoblinTown by means unknown.  He waits for the forces of Kris Karnhell, with whom he had crossed paths the day before, to conduct his own raid on the goblins, and in the confusion reveals his master plan:  assassinate the Goblin Mayor and take control of all GoblinTown for himself!

To resolve this out-of-the-box plot by Porcus Orcus, we turn our attention to that illustrious tome, the AD&D Dungeon Masters Guide.  Porcus is classed as a 5HD creature.  The Mayor is classed as a 3HD creature.  The conditions are not ideal as the Mayor is on guard and surrounded by his bodyguard.  These protective measures are mitigated somewhat by the presence of an ally who stands by ready to assist.  All told, this represents a 65% chance of success.  The roll comes up 38 - and the Mayor gasps as a blade erupts from his chest and then falls to the ground, slain instantly.

Porcus stands triumphant over the body of the slain mayor and demands the surrender of the town to him, by right of conquest.  The bodyguards hesitate...

To determine how the remaining goblins respond to this treachery, we turn our attention to the reaction tables on page 63.  The goblins are susceptible to Big Man intimidation tactics, but Porcus now stands alone in their midst.  Making a straight roll on the table results in a 68 - "uncertain but prone to positive".

The bodyguards waver.  The handful of bodyguards who witnessed the killing of the Mayor level their blades at Porcus, but wait for a command none are willing to give.  The largest of them barks out a challenging question, seeking to buy time to think.  He doesn't get it as Porcus' lieutenant now strikes at the recalcitrant bodyguard.

Once again, we turn to the assassination table where a 3HD creature attacks a 3HD creature, but striking from invisibility grants Porcus' lieutenant a bonus which bumps him up to 4HD. That results in a one column shift and a 60% chance of success.  The dice come up 82 and he fails!

The chief bodyguard hears something behind him, twists about, and runs the approaching orcish subchief through.  The goblin bodyguard deftly turns back to Porcus Orcus and grins.

How do the goblins react to this new treachery?  Once again, we roll on the reaction table and determine a result of 54: "neutral".

The bodyguard, his blade still slick with orcish

blood, thanks Porcus for his service.  A subtle shift in the power dynamics has occurred here, but the new Mayor of GoblinTown is magnanimous.  He thanks Porcus for ridding him of his rival to power, then offers Porcus a ten-minute head-start before the Goblins begin their pursuit.

Porcus spits, and snaps out a curse, but he is no fool.  He rushes out into the fire and the clangor of Kris Karnhell's ongoing raid and gets lost in the confusion.  He narrowly avoids Karnhell himself, choosing to avoid capture by a potential rival for the title of WarLord, in the streets of GoblinTown and clambers over a wall to find safety back in his camp.

Note that these are the publicly known details at this point - for precise information you'll have to ask Porcus Orcus.

A Few FAQs

Can I get a new Home Hex?

Sure, if you can wrest it from another player.  You have to reduce the total number of defenders to less than 20HD first.  Then you have to get your Warlord and his retinue to that village.  'Ome is where da Boss 'angs 'is axe, after all.

When you spawn new orcs, they will spawn in the last hex visited by your Warlord.  In other words, you cannot have two home hexes, and thus divide your spawned reinforcements.  And if you want them to spawn in the new home hex, you have to get your Warlord there first.

Can I leave my home hex undefended?

No.  You must have at least one leader and 20HD worth of defenders in your home hex.  Per the Rules, any less than 20HD worth of defenders means a total loss.  The surviving leader must be either a Warlord or a subchief.  If you are down to just one such leader, you can appoint your shaman as a leader, but this is the only instance in which shamans can become leaders.

Can I camp inside the Malturrim hex to take advantage of the Peace of the Dread Lord?

Yes. You can even linger on the Dread Lord's doorstep while waiting for a second caravan to arrive, thus spawning all your reinforcements on the same day.  Not sure why you would want to, but you could.  Bear in mind, the Dread Lord wants to see some initiative out there.  If you order your forces to hang out for too long, he may send out a herald and a few of his personal guards to help motivate your force to show a little team spirit and get back on the field of play.

On Wagons

Generally speaking, don't worry about tracking how many you have and where they are located.  Your tribes have plenty to spare in the home hex, and you can replace them as needed at Malturrim.  For game purposes, assume that you have enough wagons available to transport what you need.

Don't abuse the privilege.

An Example Draft

The draft order was pre-determined based on the order that players signed up for the campaign.  There are a total of 26 options available.  Twelve each of the starting hex and Special Abilities, plus gold and troops.

You have two different options for how you submit your draft rankings.

You can list all 26 items in the order of your choice.  This might look like this:

  1. G
  2. F
  3. E
  4. Bonus Troops
  5. Stonework Palisade
  6. Siege Master
  7. Ten Ogres
  8. Bonus Wealth
  9. D
  10. I
  11. C
  12. Warg Riders
  13. Battle Master
  14. J
  15. Slave Empire
  16. Raiders
  17. Man-Friend
  18. Goblin-Friend
  19. B
  20. A
  21. Hard Bargainer
  22. Weathermancer
  23. Elf Killers
  24. H
  25. K
  26. L

This is a player who believes in location, location, location.  He really doesn't want to get stuck with the Weathermancer or Elf Killer abilities.  Note that the auto-draft will NOT screw him over by selecting more than one starting hex.  Once he has the starting hex or special power, the rest of the selections on the list will be ignored.  So if he takes a location in the first round, the rest of the hexes are removed from his draft sheet.

The other way to submit rankings is to specify what you take in each round, with a "sublist" for each of the starting hexes and abilities.  That would look something like this:

  1. Troops
  2. Location (GFEDICJBAHKL in that order)
  3. Wealth
  4. Ability (Ranked in order of preference)
In this case, the first available hex on his list would be taken in the second round.

The GM will strictly abide by your submitted draft sheet.  This might mean that you get some terrible combinations - Goblin Friend and a starting hex on the opposite side of the map, for example.  Or lots and lots of gold and no troops to protect it!  To make matters worse, the results are completely transparent.  Other players will know what you've got, what your strengths are, and what your weaknesses are.  Plan accordingly.

Draft Order

The draft order was determined using the laziest method available: by order of sign-up.  The one exception to this was @kkalvaitis who earned the top pick of the draft by running the incredible October event of Brovenloft.

  1. @kkalvaitis (1, 24, 25, 48)
  2. @CalebHines (2, 23, 26, 47)
  3. @loremipsumf (3, 22, 27, 46)
  4. @Polyfamous (4, 21, 28, 45)
  5. @OsmulM (5, 20, 29, 44)
  6. @Oghma_EM (6. 19, 30, 43)
  7. @LL_929 (7, 18, 31, 42)
  8. @RobertB28871164 (8, 17, 32, 41)
  9. @DrakonInvictus (9, 16, 33, 40)
  10. @SivorKhalid (10, 15, 34, 39)
  11. @bellatorpoeta (11, 14, 35, 38)
  12. @Hollyfelled (12, 13, 36, 37)
To help everyone understand the actual draft order, I've put the actual pick number in parenthesis after each player's name.  While @Hollyfelled has the last choice of the first round, he gets the first pick of the second round.  As a result, his actual pick numbers are 12, 13, 36, and 37.

Draft orders are due into the GM by the end of the day, November 10th.

A Dread Lord Rises

The Curse of Lamalla has descended upon the land, and a Dread Lord's time has come.

Wister Goremaiming, master of the great black tower of Malturrim orders the sounding of Blattmore, the Fell Horn, and the thunderous bellow of that great instrument sounds the doom of man.  It is a signal to the orcish war clans that roam the vast steppes surrounding Malturrim, a signal to the Orc Lords to gather their strength and assemble within the shadowy halls of the Dark Lord's tower.  In one month, they will launch a great crusade into the wealthy, corpulent lands of men, to gather a harvest of blood and tears, gold and slaves.

So begins the great game, in which the Orc Lords vie for position in the Iron Court of the Dread Lord.  Each is called to deliver slaves, soldiers, and shekels to his Master, and with each donation the Orc Lord's status rises.  For the Dread Master cares little how such offerings are procured, only for whom the glory should be given.  As iron sharpens iron, the Orc Lords raid not just the neighboring lands, but also each other, to prove their worth, to dominate their rivals, and to prove their mettle.

Schedule

Players should get their Draft Sheets into the GM by November 11th.

Results will be posted on Monday, November 14th.

First orders - orders for the first full week of December - should be submitted by November 28th.  This will give the DM time to work out the march orders, identify clashes and raids, and publish the results for the first few days on December 1st.

We will stick with weekly orders as long as possible, but as the complexity goes up, we will make adjustments as necessary to maintain the DM's sanity.
