Decembork Final Results

The great horn of Blattmore sounds at midnight on December 31st and the Dread Lord grins a terrifying smile.  His warchiefs have done him proud.  Although a few would-be Crusader Kings have taken up residence in the ruins of orc villages nearby - the destruction of which might have earned an orc chief a few bonus points - what worry is that set against significant losses by the elves to the south, the thorough looting of those snooty dwarves up north, and the sacking of the human city to the west?

On January 1st, his agents comb through the Steppes taking stock of the forces left in the field.  The orcs dutifully submit their final tributes in the form of gold and slaves and warriors either on the road or at home, and points are scored accordingly.

In order of least to greatest, here are the final tallies:

Oghma: 0 points - the first to fall, he never really stood a chance

Lorem Ipsum: 38 points - dead early in the month, his loyal forces scored a few points in his name

Grimdark Morbad: 61 points - Had a good run, and at one point probably had enough loot to win the whole thing, but had it all stripped away.  He will long be remembered as a worthy foe.

Klon Grushnag: 93 points - A steady and stalwart chief who fell to one of the great orc alliances.  His last few orcs, holed up at home, are found protecting 1,000gp and wondering what happend out there.  Klon's name will be etched in the standing stones of the fallen as a great leader.

Sivor Khalid: 113 points - Finishes the month with 420 assorted troops, 2,200 gold, and 80 humans.  Not bad for a player who was generally quiet due to some real-world distractions.

Kris Karnhell: 116 points - Finishes the month with 330 assorted troops, 3,325 gold, and 220 humans.  One of the best pinkbelly killers in the steppes, his late push and role in the devastation of Carnatium will serve him well in the coming wars against Law

Garek Bloodtide: 119 points - Finishes the month with 580 assorted troops and 500 gold in his possession.  While the point tally is low, his large number of remaining troops testifies to Garek's methodical and efficiently effective approach to war

Kul of the Dripping Blades: 158 points - Finishes the month with 500 assorted troops, 4,325 gold, and 160 humans.  As one of the destructors of Carnatium, he surely earned a high place in the WarLord's retinue

Khaleb Ghines: 165 points - Finishes the month with 500 assorted troops, 4,200 gold, and 150 humans. As another of the principal players in the destruction of Carnatium, he has earned a high rank in the coming war.

Hollyfelled: 181 points - Finishes the month with 380 assorted troops, 1,025 gold, and 70 humans.  Hollyfelled had a great plan for preventing the Porcus steamroller from finishing the game strong, but just couldn't put the right team together to make it happen.  Even so, he threw himself at the Big Dog, and deserves credit for the attempt.

Porcus Orcus: 304 points - The Goblin-Betrayer ironically ends the game with the only goblin slaves in tow, 410 of the little buggers.  He also finishes the month with 1,010 assorted orc troops, 1,729 gold, and 210 human slaves ready for service.  It would have been more but for a late push by Hollyfelled to prevent Porcus from cashing out.  Had that last loot wagon gone through not only would Porcus have been able to raid Carnatium one last time, he would have added another 110 orcs to his forces for the final tally.

Congratulations to WarLord Porcus Orcus.  The Dread Lord bestows upon him the sacred Purple Pimp Hat of Command.

For his effective use of treachery, planning, and sheer dumb luck the Dread Lord is honored to name him first among orcs and appoint Porcus as the WarLord in the coming crusade.  He will command over 3,500 orc troops including numerous shamans and subchiefs, as well as more than 600 goblin warriors.  He will command the services of 2,740 human slaves, and a warchest of 81,860 gold!

December 31st: Results

Weather: Blustery and cold, with clear blue skies

Hollyfelled rounds out the month with one last delivery via the Magic Stone Portal.  He drops off 5,400gp and 520HD worth of human slaves, for a total of 76 points.

Carnatium

The Triple Alliance strikes Carntium itself.  It's Kul, Kris, and Khaleb, working together without the benefit of an acronym.  Kul brings 360HD of attackers, Kris brings 380HD, and Khaleb brings 470HD, putting them well over the 1,000HD required to crack the walls of the mighty city.

Kris and Kul get seven dice on the attack table, and Khaleb earns nine:

  • Kul: Loses 130HD of orcs but wins 1,600gp and adds 90HD of human slaves to his larder
  • Kris:  Loses 140HD of attackers, but 20HD of those are mere goblins.  He manages to pull 1,200gp and 130HD of human slaves out of the city
  • Khaleb: The big winner only loses 90HD of orcs in exhange for 3,100gp and 40HD of human slaves

This also means that the suburbs are empty and no further raids can occur in the human quarters.  Since this is the last day of the fight

BUT!  So pleased is the Dread Lord to see his boys effectively assault a fortified human city, each of the attackers scores 5 bonus points!

Kor Torrigan Raids

Kor Torrigan gets hit from three directions!

[Note that Sivor's forces count as two separate raids.  The dwarven mountain is not an open hex, but one that forces have to leave by the hex they entered.  It is a warren of tunnels, and Sivor's forces cannot make contact or co-ordinate their attacks.]

Garek hits the place with 420HD worth of troops, and Sivor launches two raids - his warg riders from the south with 60HD and he hits them from the southwest with 90HD.

But the dwarves only have so much gold left to loot.  The warg riders have to ride two days to reach the place, so they will be the last to raid the mountain, if anything is left.  Which leaves us with a simple initiative roll to determine which of the other two forces gets first crack at the dwarves.  Sivor wins the roll and cracks a vault containing with 900gp, losing 10HD worth of orcs to dwarven stone traps.

Garek's forces enter the near-empty mountain and to resolve this dice are rolled one at a time until all the gold is gone.  His troops manage to scrounge 500gp without loss of life, and the mountain has been cleared of dwarves.  As the chief responsible for the final clearing of the mountainhome, Garek scores three bonus points!

The warg riders show up expecting to raid, and instead find a massive celebration going on in the Dwarven King's hall, with the forces of Sivor and Garek sharing a feast to end the year.

The Dread Lord breathes a sigh of relief, as that festering pustule of Law will trouble him no more.

No deliveries today, but the Dread Lord is content - his coffers are full and his orc forces are whipped into a fine frenzy

Random Encounters

Both of Sivor Khalid's forces are hit by human witchfinders - more of those crusaders who have taken up residence in nearby villages.  The warg riders have no witches with them, and are left unmolested.  The main force of Sivor's orcs does have a spellcaster, whom the crusaders attack on site.  Though the crusaders are outnumbered two-to-one, they fight well and Sivor is forced to retreat one hex, leaving 10HD worth of orcs rotting in the fields behind.

Carnatium

A massive orc force sweeps through the northwest suburb including Khaleb Ghines' force.  They meet no resistance and do not pause to loot.

[Note: Khaleb Ghines cannot raid today as he is still reorganizing his captives and treasure from yesterday.  The other two orc leaders could, but they have a bigger squig to fry.]

Once again, the Stone Portal is the site of a terrible battle.  The place must be cursed.

Hollyfelled, seeing a slim chance of grasping victory, launches a desperate plan.  Yesterday, his forces rode south with Porcus Orcus toward the portal.  Today, as the forces make ready to use the portal, Hollyfelled's shaman summons forth a terrific blizzard that stops all movement of the wagons.  Amid white-out conditions, Hollyfelled's orcs fall upon their allies, but Porcus Orcus is no fool - he was prepared for such treachery.

Hollyfelled's force of 380HD attacks Porcus Force's 920HD, leading to a roll on the 1:2 table.  This should have been an even fight, but Hollyfelled's expected ally never shows up.  The result is a 6, the best he could have hoped for.  Porcus manages to free his wagons and cut his way clear of the fight and the blizzard.  He makes his way back north to the ruins of Grimdark Morbad's home hex.

Hollyfelled gathers his forces after Porcus is gone, and finds himself 10HD worth of orcs lighter.

[Note: going by the CRT table, the enemy - in this case Porcus - has to retreat.  That takes precedence over the weather spell, and it allows Hollyfelled at least a partial success for his trouble.]

The boys who serve subchief in charge of Porcus Orcus' treasure caravan finally get him sobered up enough to recognize the situation - he immediately hitches up the wagons and lurches into action.  He deposits 6800gp and 680HD worth of human slaves to the Black Tower for a total of 102 points, the largest deposit to date.

Sivor Khalid's warg riders deliver 1,500gp to the tower, earning him 15 points as well.

Random Encounters

A small band of 50HD worth of orcs appears before Hollyfelled.  They have heard tidings of great war and journeyed far to join in the fight.  They enlist in his band and are welcomed with open arms.

[Note: This random event occurred in hex (4,7) and these orcs had a 50-50 chance of joining Hollyfelled or Porcus Orcus.)

Carnatium Raids

Khaleb Ghines hits the southwest suburb of Carnatium in a massive raid.  They manage to drag away 4,400 gold a 450HD worth of slaves but leave behind 70HD of their own to the stout defenders.  A small sally of 50 knights arrives at dawn, but even with the column shift on the CRT can do nothing when the result is a 6.  They die valiantly without inflicting any additional casualties.

The Porcus-led alliance strikes at Grimdark's home hex with 2,090HD worth of combined troops, against a stalwart defense of 520HD, after accounting for the walls.  Without the expertise of Garek that still amounts to a 4:1 ratio and with a roll of a 5, the defenders are killed to the last orc.  They manage to inflict 50HD worth of casualties on the attackers (ten percent of the defender's numbers) before they succumb.

The defenders split the 100gp evenly this time, for 25gp each.  Don't spend it all in one place unless that place is the Tower.

[GM note: GrimdarkTown is not yet razed.  It now houses four allied Chiefs who sit on piles of plunder.  Until only one remains in the hex, or all who do agree on which chief shall claim it - and submit orders to that effect - it remains neutral ground.]

The heavily laden treasure wagons of Grimdark, Rockbrain, and Klon race for the magic portal and the safety of Malturrim.  It will be a near-run thing, but with their head start, they should reach the portal with time to spare.  The allied force from the north must see this, and still they race south for the portal.  It makes little sense to the three orc chiefs until they remember what power Holleyfelled possesses.

That small force on the far side of the magic portal sits and waits patiently until the time is right, and then their shaman opens his bag of north winds.  All the freezing hate of the far, cold north pours forth, and along with it great and powerful blasts of snow and ice.  The entire hex is consumed in a furious storm of arctic proportions, and the treasure wagons grind to a painstaking halt, less than a mile from the magic portal.

[GM Note:  The way we have used weather effects to date, they prevent the movement of treasure wagons, and not raiding forces unencumbered by loot.  Hence, the attackers can close in on, and attack the treasure wagons.]

Which paves the way for a force of six orc warbands totalling 2,310HD worth of troops to hit the defenders.  With just the three defenders totalling just 850HD, that's a 2:1 advantage, but wait!  What's this?  The remnants of Lorem Ipsum's band - one subchief and 150HD worth of troops who have been riding with Garek Bloodtide for days - turns on his ally and throw in with Grimdark's alliance!  That makes the totals 2,200HD vs. 960HD.  It's still a 2:1 advantage for the attackers, but depending on the outcome, that little bit of extra oomph could make a big difference.  With Garek Bloodtide, and experience BattleMaster, on the field the odds tilt to 3:1 in favor of the attackers.

It all comes down to one die roll on the combat CRT.

Which, in retrospect wasn't designed for this.  The combat CRT is an all or nothing proposition to deal with random encounters and patrols of humans and elves.  It wasn't designed to determine the fate of entire armies.  To keep the game from blowing up to early, these fights should have been determined using the Siege CRT or some equivalent.  But the rules are what the rules are, and we're too deep into the soup to tinker now.

One single die roll.

Six!

The enemy - meaning the guys with the treasure - is eliminated!  And worse - half their boys (400HD) see the writing on the wall and save their green hides by agreeing to fight for the victors.
  • Klon is killed in the action, killed atop a massive pile of his enemies, as is his subchief and shaman present at the battle.  His last subchief still commands a large home defense force, but cannot leave that hex without forfeiting the ability to gain reinforcements.
  • Rockbrain and Grimdark remain in the game, but they have taken a terrible blow.
The victors divide the spoils in equal measure to the forces that they brought to the fight.

December 25th: Strange Tidings

A strange white star blazes in the night sky.  It drives away the oppressive crimson stain of the Curse of Lamalla. Inside Malturrim the Dread Lord shivers and seals himself behind his strongest wards.  It is a day of fear and forlorn sorrow for all the forces of chaos.  In their tents and homes and on the march, even the bravest orc dares not show his face.  The Light of the World blazes forth from the manger, and all falls quiet in this wretched corner of the world.

We'll pick things up where we left off tomorrow.

Merry Christmas!

Weather: The weather turns cold and blustery, scattered clouds bring light snows

Kul of the Dripping Blades delivers 2,300gp to the Dread Lord, raising him considerably in the sorceror's estimation.

Khaleb Ghines delivers 350 elf ears to the boutny window in exchange for 3,500gp.  He pays 1,750gp of this to Hollyfelled for services rendered in the cause.  He cashes in 1,700gp for 17 points, then offers the Banking Goblins 30HD of goblin slaves and 50gp for two extra point for a total of 19 points scored today.

Hollyfelled cashes in his 1,750 gp for 17 points of his own.

Three orcs now have a current score of 54 points.  Porcus Orcus takes the top spot because he got there first. When the last horn sounds, we'll use that as the tie-breaker.  If things are still tied, we'll use whichever chief ends the month with the most HD worth of orcs in his warband.  If things are still tied after that, we'll use the number of goblin slaves.  And if things are still tied after that we'll have two WarLords headed out to conquer in two different directions.

  • Rockbrain - 500gp and 150HD human slaves, without suffering any losses

Weekly Update

There are ten days left in Decembork.

We're doing weekly orders.

Do the math.

That means you'll have one more chance to snatch up a couple of last slaves and coins after this week.  With only three days available, it's not much, but it might be just enough to push you over the top.  Make sure you plan this week's moves to allow for that.

Take a close look at the scoring rules and you will find that you don't need to turn your points in to the Dread Tower at all.  You probably want to turn them in on the 30th, so that you can score a final bit of reinforcements the next day, of course.  But ultimately, when the Dire Horn sounds an end to the month's activities, everyone marches to the tower under the Dread Lord's Truce, and whatever you control is scored appropriately.  If you have 300HD worth of goblins out pillaging somewhere at the end of the day on the 31st, you'll still put another 15 points on the big board.

We won't have a final count until the events of the 31st are resolved.

And then I'll make the Random Encounter tables public, so you can see what you missed out on thanks to unkind dice.

Khaleb Ghines submits an offering of 1,800gp to the Dread Tower for 18 points, which raises him considerably in the Dread Lord's estimation.

Random Encounters

  1. Kul of the dripping blade is raided by feral goblins, who manage to cut loose 10HD worth of his goblin slaves before disappearing into the steppes.
  2. A human warparty launches a daytime raid on the camp of the Khaleb Ghines and Hollyfelled alliance.  With just 60HD of them, it should be suicide, but fortune favors the bold and a disastrous result of a 1 turns the suicide mission into a kamikaze raid.  The humans kill 30HD worth of the greenskin's goblin slaves (10HD from Khaleb and 20HD from Hollyfelled) before being cut down themselves.  Hollyfelled's weathermancer elects not to blot out the sun, preferring to weather the attack rather than risk being seen to retreat from such a paltry force by the denizens of the tower. This would also cost a dangerous delay, as they would be forced to retreat one hex further from Malturrim.

A huge band of orcs shows up to enlist in the forces of the storied warchief Klon Grushnag, only to find his home village reduced to still-smoldering ashes - disappointed, they depart the region in search of orc leaders who can protect their own. [EDIT: This was a GM error.  Had I not misread the orders, there would have been a larger force here.  To make up for the error, these reinforcements are going to show up tomorrow at warchief Klon's field camp wanting to know what's going on around here. He will need to reclaim his home hex before gaining more reinforcements, but this allows for some make-up ruling that doesn't throw the game out of whack.]

Random Encounters

While passing though hex (4,7), the forces of Porcus Orcus discover a Strange Portal down in a sheltered hollow.  A large stone doorway filled with purple glowing mists stands there, and through the ethereal light, the orcs dimly perceive a familiar and dreadful sight - Malturrim.  Any force that starts its day in this hex can opt to enter the portal, which whisks them to Malturrim.  This is a one-way journey.

Nirumbee Encounters

The elves, finally spurred to anger by yesterday's raid, put on a show of force.  They dispatch another 150HD worth of elves who again suffer at the hands of the orcs.  Another result of 4 on the 3:1 advantage column spells thier doom, and all fall to the wicked blades of the orcs without inflicting a casualty in return.

Weather: mostly sunny and dry, with scattered showers over Nirumbee woods

Klon Gushnag, after a brief delay, deposits 3200gp and 280HD worth of humans at Malturrim, for 46 points.  This should strengthen his hand, but for trouble on the home front...

How terrible the grin that cracks the visage of the Dread Lord!

Random Encounters

  1. Khaleb Ghines' raiding force in hex 5,8 encounters a human raiding party on the hunt for witches.  As Khaleb's force does not have a shaman, the humans move on without conflict.
  2. Human crusaders strike at Old PorcusTown in hex 10,8.  They move in, sanctify the place, and set up shop.
How strange that after so many days of no random encounters, today should spawn two instances of the same one.  This calls for some creative interpretation.  Two shields have appeared on the map, below, each marking the location of a persistent encounter.  The wandering crusaders who appeared in 5,8 will move toward Old Old PorcusTown at one hex per day, still hunting witches.  They will attack any orc force that contains one, and will halt at Old PorcusTown to reinforce their comrades there.  By their speed on rainy days, one can see that the wanderers carry no treasure, but who can say what treasures now lie waiting in Old PorcusTown?

Carnatium Raids

Sivor Khan's swift warg riders sweep into the outskirts of Carnatium.  The humans struggle to respond in time, and the raid leaves the city 500gp and 80HD worth of slaves poorer.  All with no casualties.  The orcs manage to swing north out of the hex, but now laden with treasure and a string of slaves behind, until they arrive home, even the wargs will have to slow their pace to just one hex per day.

Nirumbee Encounters

The elves, finally spurred to anger by yesterday's raid, put on a show of force.  An ambush of 170HD worth of elves.  The orcs feign a retreat, leading the elves into an ambush of their own.  With Hollyfelled's weathermance summoning rain and blotting out the sun, this turns the field into a 3:1 advantage.  The result of a 4 indicates a total rout of the elves with no casualties for the orc forces.

Map Moves

Sivor Khalid runs a large force - a subchief, shaman, and 80HD worth of boys - to KlonTown where they sense an opportunity.  Rather than wait for the force from the south to arrive, they launch an attack alone.  Against a minimal garrison, they have a 2:1 advantage even with the city walls in place, and roll a 4.  The attackers lose a third the HD of the defenders, which rounds up to a loss of 20HD.  The defenders perish to an orc, the town is burned, and Klon's forces go full nomad!  Klon can still score points, but with no home hex, can no longer spawn reinforcements.

Update from Malturrim

Closing out the second week of Decembork, the Dread Lord is content.  His boys are really showing a lot of gumption out there.  His money-counters are also pleased with a total of 32,556gp donated to the cause so far.  The addition of 180 human slaves and 360 goblins to his forces is lighter than he hoped, but enough to keep him from throwing unpleasant energies down from his tower. If you ask me, if he really wanted things to move faster, he would have done something about the weather.  What's all that dark power for if not to grease the wheels for his loyal troops, eh?

To clarify some odd events and rulings from this past week:

The original rules said you needed one subchief at home and one with every raiding party.  This was to limit your ability to hare off in a thousand different directions and save my sanity which would be lost if I had to track more than fifty warbands.  That still pretty much stands, but a number of you wanted to leave your homes stripped of troops and made a good case for it.  As always, this game is about risks and rewards.  So you can leave your home undefended, but every day it sits there it risks a random encounter check (10%).  If that hits, and the encounter is capable of it, the encounter can move in uncontested and you'll have to fight your way back in.  Note that, unless you control a home hex, you cannot spawn troops.

This is what happened to Kris Karnhell this week.  Those stone walls don't look so good from the outside.  This partially explains what's going on with the last dregs of Lorem Ipsum - without a warlord, his boys have emptied LoremTown and gone rogue.  They are now murderhoborcs roaming the steppe in search of gold and glory for themselves.

If a chief does sack another orc's homehex and want to claim it as his new homehex, he can keep control over the old town provided he maintains that 20HD minimum force there.  But if he wants to make the newly sacked hex his homehex, he has to have the only orc force in that hex, and he has to spend a day rearranging the furniture and kicking out the old guy's mother-in-law and whatnot.  Them's the costs of moving day.

This is similar to the prohibition on raiding the same hex twice in a row.  You have to pull-back, gather your troops, and make ready for a second assault.  We've seen this a couple of times, but it might not have been clear, so I wanted to highlight that.

Garek Bloodtide, on his way to finish off Lorem Ipsum and claim LoremTown for his won, spies the last dregs of his rival's forces headed for GarekTown and thinks, "By Lamalla's Salty Bosom, we'll have none of that!"  He moves to intercept and with 380HD worth of troops to Lorem's 200HD just manages to miss out on that sweet 2:1 column on the CRT.  He rolls a 3 instead on the 1:1 column, which proves that there is fight left in Lorem after all. Garek loses 10HD and retreats to his home hex.  Perhaps this was just a scouting mission after all?

[UPDATE: With Garek's skill as a Battlemaster, that should push the odds back up to 2:1.  After checking to see who counts as the attacker, it's Lorem.  The die roll stands at 3, which means Lorem is attacking at 1:2 odds, and the result is a defeat for Lorem.  He loses 30HD worth of troops and is forced to retreat one hex.  The map has been updaed to reflect this change.]

Porcus moves into the KlonTown hex, but doesn't like the look of things.  Behind him, a large force of Klon's boyz waits in hex 5,6 to serve as the hammer to the anvil of KlonTown's walls.  To show his good intentions, he steers well clear of the walls, and the day passes without bloodshed here.  But things remain tense heading into the next day...

The easy pickings jsut got a lot harder.  The subchief decides not to risk a fight, but Gizzard the Wizard has other ideas.  Given the proximity of Malturrim, Porcus' cagy wizard asks for a chance to sneak in and steal some loot on his own.

No reward without risk, he is offered a mini-game: A single 1d6 roll to make off with some gold. On a 1 he fails but gets away and back to his force and on a 6 he is killed in the attempt. Any other result nets him that number times 50gp. Which he declines.

Sivor's Raid
In hex 3,5, Sivor Khan catches up to the treasure caravan of Klon Grushnag, just as reinforcements arrive from KlonTown.  With the arrival of those reinforcements, he is badly outnumbered, 110HD to 310HD, putting him on the 1:2 column of the CRT.  With the result of a 4, he loses 10HD worth of troops and is forced to retreat back to hex 2,4.

The Retaking of KlonhellTown 1, 2, 3
Kris Klonhell hits his lost home from the north, as an allied contingent from Old PorcusTown arrives in the southeast.  Combined, they hit the 60HD worth of pinkbelly squatters (who fight as 120HD thanks to Kris' stonewalls) with 560HD worth of orc warriors for a whopping 9:1 ratio.  The result of a 5 indicates that the defenders suffer 500HD worth of casualties to just 10HD for the attackers.  Kris takes the loss and regains his home, slaughtering the usurpers in the process.  He'll need to spend tomorrow cleaning out the human stink but can rest easy in his own pile of furs tonight.

Lorem Ambushed
Although no longer weighed down with his treasure, Lorem finds himself facing an orcish alliance anyway.  Headed back to his home village to reunite with his fresh troops, he stumbles into a large raiding party of Garuk, Rockbrain, and Khaleb [and Hollyfelled!].  They must be looking to limit his power and perhaps convince a few lads to come over to their team.  Whatever the case, with such odds stacked against him, Lorum has a 50-50 chance of escape and fails. Lorem brings 300HD worth of troops into a fight against Garuk's 180HD, Rockbrain's 60HD, and Khaleb's 80HD, which makes for a 1:1 fight, which gets shifted one column in the attackers' favor due to Rockbrain's skill as a Battlemaster.

With a result of a 6(!) on the attack table, the coalition completely vanquishes Lorem's forces and presses half of them into service.  This amounts to 30HD of orcs and the liberation of 20HD worth of goblin slaves for each of them.  [Update: Lorem himself fights to the death, as all chiefs should.  This leaves Lorem Ipsum with just one subchief and no way to send raiders out into the wilds without leaving his home hex abandoned.]
[Second update:  I missed that Hollyfelled participated in the fight and looting of Lorem's forces, too. His presence wouldn't have changed things, but to compensate for my error, we'll say he arrives in time to round up a few scattered survivors as well.]

OghmaTown
Kris Karnhell and Porcus Orcus share the ruins of Oghma's village.  To the surprise of Porcus, an expected band of reinforcements do not arrive - they arrive at his home hex four days to the south.  His plan to sieze Oghma's village for his own has run into the catch that he doesn't control the ruined village - he shares it with the forces of Kris Karnhell and can't properly claim it as his new and improved home hex!

The two Orc leaders, Porcus and Karnhell, spend the day snarling and posturing and doing all the warrior posturing that makes up the bulk of orc negotiations before settling on a suitable bargain.  Plans are laid, and the day ends with a proper victory feast.

The big seige of Oghma village arrives as six raiding forces swarm her walls.  Porcus Orcus, Kul of the Dripping Blade, and Kris Karnhell hit the battered fortress and its 260HD of defenders, bumped up to 390HD due to the stone walls of Fort Oghma.  The attackers hit him with a total of 1,090 HD worth of troops (420HD for Porcus, 370HD for Kris Karnhell, and 300HD for Kul).  Even with all those numbers, it would still be just a 3:1 advantage for the attackers, but Porcus Orcus laid in some detailed plans for the gatehouse.  His pet weirdboy hit a subchief's bodyguard with a powerful invisibility and levitate combination that tips the scales into a one column shift in his favor for a roll on the 3:1 column of the siege CRT.  A result of 5 on the chart indicates a heroic stand for Oghma, and his last.

Taking 75% of the attacker's HD in casualties wipes him out to the last orc.  The 25% casualties for the attackers results in 90HD worth of casualties to the combined force for just 30HD each.  Oghma, his leaders, and ogres fight to the last.  Once they fall the remaining defenders see the writing on the wall - they take up service in the other chief's camps - which mitigates their losses to the tune of 10HD of orcs each and adds 40HD of goblins to each of their service.

Klon Grushnag delivers 2,400gp and 180HD of human slaves to Malturrim for a total of 33 points.

The Dread Lord is well pleased.

Random Encounters

We got one, and what a beauty it is.  Kris Karnhell, finding himself with a lot of boyz with nothing to do, opts to send them and his last subchief to rendezvous with his forces gathering to the north.  This leaves his home-hex completely undefended.  After talking to the player, we decided that it would be fair to roll for random encounters for empty home hexes.  What a time to finally hit a random encounter.  A total of 90HD of human warriors shows up, spoiling for trouble and instead finds a nice and tidy new home to call their own.  To make matters worse, they set up shop behind his stone walls, meaning that an assault faces an effective 180HD of defenders.  Until he recovers his home-hex, he cannot spawn any new troops.

Chief Rockbrain encounters 40HD of goblins on his way into hex (6,4).  With a force of 60HD worth of orcs we have a 1:1 ratio.  A result of 4 on the CRT means that Rockbrain loses 20HD worth of warriors before dealing with the little brutes.  He does manage to mitigate the loss by capturing 20HD of the little buggers before they scupper off.

Quite a traffic jam building up on the roads to Malturrim.

Recognizing that Lorem Ipsum's heavy wagons must be laden with huge stacks of loot, Garuk Bloodtide decides to call in the heavy artillery.  He negotiates an alliance with Chief Rockbrain for assistance, and they meet up just outside of Malturrim to help relieve Lorem of his heavy burden.

Chief Rockbrain is slowed down by an encounter with a few goblins (see above), which limits his aid in the fight to just 40HD worth of troops.  Garuk himself, his shaman, and 150HD worth of boys brings the tally up to 190HD pitted against Lorem's 300HD worth of troops.  Lorem, eager to lose any of his hard-won booty, attempts to avoid the attack. There is only a 2 in 6 chance of him escaping this time.  His wagons are heavily loaded, and he is being hit from two different directions.  With a roll of a 2, he slips away in the night and his force (and its treasure) will arrive safely in Malturrim tomorrow.
